Zero Order Wave plates(1/2 and 1/4 wave plates) are made from two crystalline quartz plates of similar thickness, that are contacted together with orthogonally aligned optical axes. Retardation varies slowly with wavelength, thus they are useful with tunable or broadband sources. Retardation is a function of thickness difference between the two plates, and is essentially invariant with temperature. It aslo shows better performance than multiple order waveplates.
To suit different applications, air spaced, glued or optically contacted Zero order compensated phase retardation plates are available.
Cemented or Optically Contracted Zero Order Waveplate
It is constructed of two multi-order wave plates with their axis crossed. Thus,it performs as a zero-order waveplate because of the effect of two plates counteracting each other. It has wide temperature bandwidth and wavelength bandwidth properties. Due to it is cemented,the damage threshold must be considered(about 10MW/cm2) when application.

Airspaced Zero Order Waveplates
Its performance is as good as cemented zero-order waveplate. The airspaced construction enables it is suitable for the high power laser applications. The damage threshold is more than 500MW/cm2.
